About

for every child

Description

UNICEF works in over 190 countries and territories to save children’s lives, to defend their rights, and to help them fulfil their potential, from early childhood through adolescence. And we never give up.

Every child has the right to grow up in a safe and inclusive environment

UNICEF works with partners around the world to promote policies and expand access to services that protect all children.

Nutrition: Why it matters

When children get the right food at the right time their brains and bodies develop the way they should. When this doesn’t happen, malnutrition occurs. It robs children of their futures and threatens their lives.

Unicef is the world’s leading organisation in preventing and treating all forms of malnutrition. Since 1990, the percentage of undernourished children worldwide has almost halved. But we still have a lot of work to do. Today 200 million children’s lives are at risk because they are malnourished.

The chance to learn can change a child’s life

Every child has the right to an education – whatever their background, gender or ethnicity. Unicef wants to see a world where all children enjoy this right.

Yet every day, more than 61 million children don’t attend their primary schools. Without the opportunity to learn, children can’t develop to their full potential. They’re more likely to be trapped in cycles of poverty, poor health and forced labour – often in dangerous environments.

Unicef supports innovative programmes that give the most vulnerable children the chance to learn. We work with governments, communities and parents to enable every child to access a quality education.

Rapid response, long-term support

When war breaks out or disaster strikes, children can lose their schools, their homes and their families. Their access to water, food and shelter can be seriously affected and they are left more vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.

Unicef has a presence in 190 countries so can rapidly reach children and families with support when an emergency happens. We’re there to provide children with the care, supplies and protection that could save their lives.

We help communities to recover as quickly as possible and prepare them for the future. That means making sure children can continue their education and have access to the services that will give them the chance to not only survive but to thrive.

Climate change is endangering children and threatening their futures

Climate change puts children’s most basic rights at risk, seriously affecting their access to health, food, water, clean air, education and protection. Around the world, the growing number of extreme weather events is putting more and more children’s live’s in danger. Every year, environmental factors take the lives of 1.7 million children under five.

For an even greater number of children, these events mean a reduced chance of a happy, healthy future. When floods hit, schools and health clinics are destroyed. When droughts occur, children spend less time in school because they have to walk miles to collect water. Rising sea levels and toxic air pollution turn children’s communities into hazardous environments to grow up in.

These aren’t problems that can wait. They are problems right now, and Unicef is working tirelessly to help solve them.
